What is Respiratory Care?
Respiratory Care is the physiotherapy management of all pulmonary related disorders, be it idiopathic, pathological or traumatic. It may involve a variety of mechanical and manual techniques, deep breathing exercises, education and exercise therapy, all with the aim of airway clearance, improving lung capacity and thus optimizing the gaseous exchange process.
What is Cardiopulmonary Rehab?
In the discipline of Physiotherapy , Cardiopulmonary Rehab focuses on optimizing the physical function of patients who have suffered a cardiac or pulmonary event , sustained cardiothoracic or abdominal surgery, trauma injury compromising the heart or lungs , or have been diagnosed with a cardiac or pulmonary chronic condition where ongoing management may be required.
Acute Rehab starts in a hospital setting, post event or surgery, and uses respiratory care and appropriate exercise therapy to prevent any further post-event or post-surgical pulmonary complications. It focuses on optimizing lung function and functional mobility to return patients to their baseline.
Chronic Rehab continues post hospital discharge and uses education and guided exercise therapy within the constraints of the patients existing condition to promote functionality, cardiovascular health and lifestyle changes with the aim of physically enhancing the patients’ quality of life.
